Researches in Electrospinning, Carbon Fibers, Biomedical Textiles, and Textiles in Fire Fighting for ATHM

Course: 22.296 - Mechanical Behavior of Materials

Semester: Spring 2007

Instructor: Emmanuelle Reynaud

Partner: American Textile History Museum (ATHM)

Partner Description:  The American Textile History Museum is undergoing a transformation to cut costs and improve awareness of their mission and resources.  One of most pressing needs for the ATHM is to extend their exhibit timeline beyond 1910.  Staff has begun researching modern textiles for modules to include in their school group programs immediately but would like help.  They are also looking to UML for assistance with temporary and, eventually as funding allows, permanent exhibits and displays.

Project Description:
Four topics of the highest priority were selected by the ATHM, including electrospinning, carbon fibers, biomedical textiles, and textiles in fire fighting.  Each group of students researched their topic, created an annotated bibliography for ATHM staff and presented their findings in Powerpoint presentations at the museum.  Prior to the project the students spent class time at the museum learning its history, mission, project context and a full tour of exhibit and laboratory space.
